The day I’ve been waiting for is finally here! The first home game of the season!
I have been a baseball fan since I was about 12 years old.
One of my first and fondest memories of baseball ….It was 1974 and it was the World Series.
Oakland A’s vs Los Angeles Dodgers.
I didn’t know much about baseball, but I did know that Rollie Fingers had a pretty cool mustache, and Catfish Hunter was a very intriguing name!
It was just me and my Dad, and I was soaking up every bit of this very special moment. So I started cheering for the A’s…. and my Dad, well he cheered on the Dodgers!
I was excited about the game, but more than anything I was loving the camaraderie with my Dad. Daddy’s little girl, and I was going to make him proud! He didn’t seem to mind that I wasn’t cheering for his team. He patiently taught me the basics of baseball so that I could cheer on “my team” too!
Unfortunately, that was the last game I watched with my Dad. He died just a few short months later, and I never had the pleasure of watching another baseball game with him.
I carried the love for the game in my heart, packed it down a little and left it dormant for a while.
Fast forward to the year 1984. I’m living in San Diego, and the San Diego Padres are having a pretty good year!
It was the year of Tony Gwynn, Garry Templeton, Steve Garvey,Dave Dravecky, and Goose Gossage, just to name a few!
And my love for the game was brought back to life!
I just found a new baseball team to cheer for! I mean after all, I was really never an “A’s” fan, so why not!
The Padres were the NL West Champions that year, and they made it to the “big game“! They didn’t win, but it was a pretty amazing start for this new fan.
My husband didn’t play or watch baseball much, so it was fun for me to be able to introduce the game to him, and to my son. My 1-year-old daughter even became excited about it when we would watch, and she would stand in front of the TV and cheer them on!
My son and daughter are married and on their own now, but they are still Padre fans to this day!
And my husband…well, he likes the game because I do! And I love watching it with him! Over the years, we’ve taught each other to enjoy our favorite games together! He likes football and golf, I like baseball.
We both like to watch all three of them now! Together!
This year, he surprised me with tickets to the Season Opening Day game! I’m really looking forward to the game, and I really hope they win!
And, thanks Dad, for teaching me about the great game of baseball! I still can’t cheer for your team, but I think you would be proud of your little girl and the legacy of baseball you passed on to her!
He was more than just proud of you for being his little “baseball buddy” but the joy you brought to our lives. I was told – and I hope you heard it – the last thing he said when he left the house that day, when asked if he had a lunch was, “Becky fixed it for me, she’s a really good girl.”
Go Padres! I love you – Mom
YAY! Have fun at the game Becky! 🙂
Thank you! It was a great game! It’s so much better when they win, especially at home! 🙂
